The Day We Stand in Queue for Water Is Closer Than We Think

Every year, as summer reaches its peak, millions of eyes turn towards the sky, waiting for the first drops of rain. The arrival of the monsoon is not just a change in weather—it is a sign of relief, a hope that taps will continue to flow and reservoirs will replenish.

But a concerning question remains: Are we waiting for rain, or are we waiting for a warning that we have ignored for too long?

Today, water shortages are being reported in some parts of major cities, including Mumbai. Water tankers have become a regular necessity for many families. Groundwater levels are declining, lakes are shrinking, and the demand for water continues to rise alongside rapid urban growth.

Imagine a day when water becomes as commercially valuable as fuel. A day when families drive to a water distribution station, wait in long queues, and pay for every litre they carry home—much like people visit petrol pumps to fill their vehicles.

It may sound like a frightening prediction, but if water continues to be wasted and conservation efforts remain inadequate, such a future may not be far away.

The encouraging reality is that the solution begins with simple changes. A leaking tap repaired today can save thousands of litres of water in a year. Using a bucket instead of an overflowing hose, adopting rainwater harvesting practices, and being mindful of daily water consumption can collectively help protect a resource that sustains all life.

Previous generations valued every drop because they understood its importance. Today, we have the advantage of technology and greater awareness, but without responsible action, those advantages alone will not be enough.

Nature has always provided water freely. The question is whether our actions will force future generations to purchase the very gift that once flowed abundantly from rivers, lakes, and rainfall.

The next time clouds gather and the first raindrops touch the earth, let us celebrate not only the arrival of rain but also our commitment to protect every drop it brings.

Save water today, because the day we buy water like petrol is not a distant possibility—it is a future we may create ourselves if we fail to act responsibly.
