Recent Earthquake Tremors Felt Across Parts of Eastern India

Residents in several parts of eastern India reported feeling earthquake tremors on 7 June 2026. Areas in northern West Bengal, including Siliguri and Cooch Behar, were among the locations where people experienced brief shaking, prompting some residents to move outdoors as a precaution.

According to preliminary information from seismological agencies, the earthquake originated in the India–Bangladesh region. Authorities were assessing its magnitude, depth, and overall impact at the time of reporting.

No major loss of life or significant damage to infrastructure was immediately reported by local authorities. Emergency services and district administrations remained alert and continued to monitor the situation.

India lies in a seismically active zone due to the ongoing interaction between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. As a result, several regions of the country, particularly the Himalayan belt and northeastern states, remain vulnerable to earthquakes of varying intensity.

Experts advise citizens to stay informed through official government and disaster-management channels and to follow established earthquake safety guidelines. During seismic activity, people are advised to remain calm, take cover under sturdy furniture if indoors, avoid elevators, and stay away from structures that may be unstable.

Preparedness, awareness, and timely information remain important factors in reducing risks and ensuring public safety during earthquake events.
