Lucknow | Ground Report
Every day, thousands of people walk through the busy streets of Lucknow to reach schools, offices, hospitals, markets and metro stations. However, for many pedestrians, simply walking safely has become a challenge.
During a visit to one of the city’s busy areas, it was observed that large sections of the footpath were occupied by parked motorcycles, temporary stalls and construction material. As a result, pedestrians were forced to walk on the main road alongside moving vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents.
Senior citizens, school children and persons with disabilities are among those most affected. Many residents said they have accepted the situation because it has remained unchanged for years. Despite being a daily problem, it rarely receives public attention unless an accident occurs.
Footpaths are an important part of any city’s infrastructure. They are meant to provide safe and convenient movement for pedestrians. When they are blocked or damaged, the burden falls on ordinary citizens.
Experts believe that regular inspections, strict action against encroachments and better maintenance can significantly improve pedestrian safety. Citizens also have a responsibility to avoid parking vehicles on footpaths and to keep public spaces accessible.
A city’s progress should not be measured only by the number of flyovers or wider roads. It should also be measured by how safely a child, an elderly person or a daily commuter can walk.
Thousands of people use these footpaths every day.
Everyone walks here.
Yet almost nobody reports it.
