Art meets literature in a compelling new exhibition titled “Dil… Meer, Ghalib, Iqbal, Faiz, Faraz-o-Jaun ki Zubani”, created by the talented Arshi Irshad Ahmadzai. This stunning work features six ghazals from renowned poets, each exploring the depths of the human heart, depicted through intricate calligraphy and visual storytelling. The vibrant Urdu couplets, with the word “dil” serving as their thematic anchor, are creatively arranged in vertical columns akin to crescent moons or symbolic mourning figures.
The collection includes notable lines from celebrated poets such as Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s “kab tak dil ki khair manae” and Ahmed Faraz’s “ranjish hi sahi, dil dukhane ke liye aa”. Each column culminates with a striking illustration of a solitary, wandering heart, embodying the emotions conveyed in the verses. These artworks are not just a feast for the eyes but also a potent reminder of the power of words and their ability to evoke profound emotions.
Ahmadzai’s series, part of her larger project titled Nafas or Isolation Diaries, takes on a deeply personal dimension, emerging from letters she penned to her husband during her solitude at her parents’ home in Najibabad, Uttar Pradesh. The pandemic confinement prompted her to explore her feelings and experiences through art, intertwining her visual style with rich Urdu text for the first time.
This innovative approach allows readers and viewers to navigate the complexities of Ahmadzai’s inner world, as she channels her feelings of isolation, longing, and expectation through the lens of esteemed Urdu poets. The incorporation of literary references not only enriches her artistic expression but also situates her personal narrative within a broader cultural and historical context, making her work resonant with those familiar with Urdu poetry.
Through the Nafas series, Ahmadzai invites audiences to reflect on their own experiences of love, loss, and connection, encapsulated in the beauty of Urdu ghazals. The letters, adorned with poetic imagery and symbols from her visual repertoire, offer a glimpse into the emotional landscape of an artist grappling with the realities of waiting and the bittersweet nature of love.
