ED Conducts Raids on TMC MLA Madan Mitra Amid Municipal Recruitment Scam Investigation

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) intensified its probe into alleged corruption within municipal recruitment processes by raiding multiple locations associated with Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Madan Mitra on Saturday. This crackdown is part of a larger investigation into money laundering linked to a purported recruitment scam affecting various municipal bodies in West Bengal.

Mitra, who has previously served as a minister in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, currently represents the Kamarhati Assembly constituency in the North 24 Parganas district. The ED’s operation spanned seven sites connected to him, reflecting the agency’s commitment to uncovering the networks of corruption that have plagued local governance.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, Mitra is alleged to have accepted significant bribes, both in cash and in gold, facilitated by intermediaries. These illicit transactions were purportedly made in exchange for securing appointments to various municipal roles, including those within the Kamarhati municipality itself. Reports suggest that Mitra may be implicated in around 125 unauthorized appointments, raising serious questions about the integrity of recruitment processes in local governance.

This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of political figures in West Bengal, where the TMC has faced various allegations of corruption over the years. The ED’s ongoing investigation into the recruitment scam underscores a broader concern regarding transparency and accountability within the state’s administrative framework. As these revelations unfold, they could have significant implications not just for Mitra, but for the TMC as a whole.

As the investigation progresses, the ED is expected to gather more evidence and potentially expand its inquiries to other officials involved in the recruitment process. The political landscape in West Bengal is already charged, and these allegations could further complicate matters for Mamata Banerjee’s government as they navigate public sentiment and accountability in governance.
