Exploring Urban Isolation: Bangladeshi Film 'Sand City' Shines Light on Modern Life's Fragility

In a captivating reflection of modern life, Bangladeshi filmmaker Mahde Hasan’s debut feature film, Sand City, artfully navigates the themes of isolation and aspiration amidst the urban chaos of Dhaka. The narrative revolves around two solitary characters—Hassan, played by Mostafa Monwar, and Emma, portrayed by Victoria Chakma—who find their lives intertwined through a shared obsession with sand.

Hassan, an employee in a local factory, clandestinely collects samples of silica sand, limestone, and soda ash with dreams of establishing his own glass factory. Emma, on the other hand, requires sand for a more mundane purpose: as litter for her cat. Their journeys through the teeming streets of Dhaka resemble those of scavengers, as they retreat to their humble abodes to examine their precious finds. The sand becomes a vehicle for unexpected discoveries—Hassan stumbles upon a mobile phone, while Emma uncovers a severed finger adorned with crimson nail polish.

Set against the backdrop of one of South Asia’s bustling metropolises, Sand City is a poignant commentary on urban existence. The film explores the notion of ‘urban sensorium cinema,’ a term used by film scholars to describe works that intricately weave together a city’s architectural diversity, housing styles, movement patterns, and the often fragmented lives of its inhabitants. This stylistic approach not only captures the physical essence of Dhaka but also evokes an emotional response from viewers, grounding their experience in the palpable tension of city life.

With a runtime of 100 minutes, Sand City recently featured at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, held from April 23-26, and is anticipated to make its debut in Bangladesh soon. The film, which Hasan also wrote and edited, boasts striking visuals captured by cinematographer Mathieu Giombini, enhancing its thematic depth and aesthetic appeal. Hasan, who is also known for his acclaimed short films, shared his thoughts on the symbolic use of sand as a motif that represents the fragility of urban existence, revealing the poignant realities faced by individuals in a rapidly modernizing society.

As Hasan explains, the choice of sand serves as a metaphor for the transient nature of life in the city—a material that is both common and yet rich with hidden meanings. It evokes the vulnerability of urban dwellers, who navigate the complexities of modernity while grappling with their dreams and desires. Sand City stands as a testament to the power of cinema to shed light on the human condition, offering viewers a chance to reflect on their own experiences within the urban landscape.
