FIFA allows Afghan women to play for their country, defying Taliban

Afghanistan’s women footballers, many of whom have been living in exile for several years, are now set to represent their country in official international matches following a landmark decision by FIFA.

The decision was taken during a FIFA Council meeting, where regulations were amended to allow Afghan women players to compete as the national team with full international recognition. This marks a significant shift from earlier rules, which required recognition through the country’s official football federation.

Since 2021, Afghanistan’s football federation has not supported the women’s program, resulting in female players being unable to participate in international competitions. Many players relocated to countries such as Australia, the United States, and parts of Europe, where they continued training and advocating for official recognition.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the move as an important step toward inclusivity in global sport. He emphasized that enabling Afghan women to represent their country reflects a commitment to fairness and equal opportunity in football.

The group of players had previously been competing under a refugee team setup and had consistently called for recognition as Afghanistan’s official women’s national team. The new decision addresses these concerns and restores their opportunity to compete under their national identity.

While the team will not participate in the qualification process for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, they are expected to be eligible for future international events, including Olympic qualifiers. Preparations are underway for upcoming training camps and matches as part of their reintegration into international competition.

FIFA has also announced support measures, including financial, technical, and administrative assistance, to help the team transition smoothly into official tournaments.

The regulatory change is seen as a broader precedent that may apply in situations where players are unable to represent their country due to institutional or external restrictions. It highlights ongoing efforts within international sport to ensure participation rights are upheld regardless of circumstances.
