India's Press Freedom Declines to 157th Rank in 2026 World Index

India has found itself slipping down the ranks in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, published by the international media watchdog, Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF). With a disheartening 157th position out of 180 countries, this stark decline from the previous year’s 151st rank serves as a concerning indicator of the state of journalism in the country.

The report highlights an alarming trend where legal measures are increasingly being utilized as tools to suppress independent media. Reporters Without Borders categorizes India’s press freedom situation as ‘very serious,’ emphasizing the intensified judicial harassment faced by journalists. This environment of fear is largely fueled by the growing application of criminal statutes, such as defamation and national security laws, which are being directed at those who dare to challenge the status quo.

For the first time in the history of the World Press Freedom Index, it has been noted that over half of the countries assessed fall into the ‘difficult’ or ‘very serious’ categories regarding press freedom. This marks a significant shift from 2002 when only a mere 13.7% of nations were experiencing such restrictions. The current average press freedom score across the surveyed 180 countries and territories is alarmingly low, further emphasizing the need for urgent reforms to protect journalistic integrity and freedom.

Reporters Without Borders has pointed out that the expansion of restrictive legislative tools, particularly those tied to national security, has been steadily undermining the fundamental right to information. This trend is not limited to India; it reflects a global crisis in press freedom that has been exacerbated by a range of factors, including political instability, public health emergencies, and the rise of authoritarianism.

As India grapples with its deteriorating press freedom, it is essential for citizens to advocate for a media landscape that prioritizes transparency and accountability. Supporting independent journalism is crucial to fostering a democratic society where information can flow freely and where the voices of dissent are heard and respected. The findings of the 2026 World Press Freedom Index serve not only as a wake-up call for policymakers but also as a reminder to the public of the vital role a free press plays in a healthy democracy.
