Former TMC Minister Accuses Abhishek Banerjee of Intimidation in Police Complaint

In a significant political development in West Bengal, former Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister Giasuddin Molla has lodged a police complaint against the party’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. The complaint, which also names a former sub-divisional police officer, Mithun Kumar Dey, alleges threats and intimidation aimed at Molla, as reported by The Indian Express on Sunday.

This incident unfolds just two days after the police registered a first information report (FIR) against Banerjee, stemming from provocative remarks he reportedly made during an election campaign. These remarks allegedly included threats targeted at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, intensifying tensions within the political landscape of the state.

Molla’s complaint sheds light on a troubling narrative of internal strife within the TMC, where he describes a culture of fear among party members. He claims that Mithun Kumar Dey, in his role as a police officer, engaged in “unwarranted punitive action” against local TMC leaders and supporters who resisted what Molla describes as Banerjee’s autocratic leadership style. “I was in a state of fear, and so I did not dare to open my mouth,” Molla expressed, highlighting the perilous environment faced by dissenting voices within the party. “I was afraid that I might be attacked and heckled by my own party workers,” he added, illustrating the palpable tension among the ranks.

In a bid to reclaim his agency, Giasuddin Molla decided to take action, stating, “I have faith in the administration led by the new chief minister, Suvendu Adhikari.” This statement suggests a shift in allegiance and a burgeoning confidence in the current leadership under Adhikari. Furthermore, Molla claimed that Dey had previously inflicted physical harm on TMC workers, describing incidents of torture that reportedly occurred within police precincts. Such allegations, if proven true, indicate a grave abuse of power that could have serious implications for law enforcement in the region.

As the political climate in West Bengal grows increasingly complex, the accusations against Banerjee and his associates could have far-reaching consequences not only for the TMC but also for the broader political dynamics in the state. This unfolding story highlights the challenges that political figures face when navigating the often treacherous waters of party loyalty and personal safety.
