GI Tag Delay Raises Concerns Among Madanapalle Weavers

Madanapalle, Annamayya District, June 18:

The absence of a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for traditional sarees produced in Madanapalle has emerged as a concern among local weavers and textile manufacturers. Madanapalle has long been associated with saree weaving and remains an important center for textile production in the Rayalaseema region.

According to local weavers, obtaining a GI Tag could help establish a distinct identity for Madanapalle sarees and differentiate them from machine-made products available in the market. Some weaving communities say they face increasing competition from powerloom products and imitation designs.

Master weavers and industry representatives believe that GI recognition could help promote the authenticity of Madanapalle sarees and potentially enhance their visibility in domestic and international markets. They also suggest that such recognition may contribute to improved market opportunities for families engaged in the weaving sector.

Industry stakeholders have called on government departments and textile authorities to consider measures related to the documentation and recognition of Madanapalle’s weaving tradition. They argue that preserving the region’s textile heritage is important for the long-term sustainability of the handloom sector.

Weavers say they remain optimistic that continued efforts by stakeholders and authorities may support greater recognition of Madanapalle sarees and strengthen the future of the local weaving industry.
