Government Restricts Industrial Fuel Purchases Amid Supply Concerns

In a significant move to manage the ongoing fuel supply crisis, the Indian government has prohibited industrial and commercial consumers from purchasing petrol and diesel at retail outlets. This directive, issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, comes in response to supply disruptions linked to ongoing conflicts in West Asia, which have adversely affected global fuel supply chains.

This regulation mandates that industrial and commercial establishments source their fuel exclusively from designated supply channels, which cannot be resold. The order will remain in effect for a period of 90 days, unless rescinded earlier. The Ministry’s decision was prompted by a marked spike in retail fuel sales, attributed to commercial users shifting their sourcing strategies to take advantage of lower retail prices compared to bulk purchases.

The government’s move aims to mitigate the risk of localized fuel shortages that could disrupt essential services across the country. By diverting supplies meant for everyday consumers towards industrial and commercial buyers, the situation has raised alarms about potential crises in fuel availability.

The backdrop to this decision is the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have strained global fuel supply chains and affected the shipping and availability of petroleum products. The government underscored the necessity for judicious management and conservation of existing fuel stocks in light of these unpredictable global circumstances. The Ministry’s order reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that essential services remain operational and that fuel remains accessible to the general public.

As part of the response to the evolving situation, prices of petrol and diesel have recently been adjusted upward, with increases of Rs 7.5 noted at various outlets. The government aims to stabilize the market while ensuring that the needs of ordinary consumers are prioritized amidst escalating demand from industrial sectors.
