AC Sleeper Buses Under Scrutiny Over Glass-Enclosed Berths; Transport Authority Seizes Vehicle in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The installation of glass-enclosed cabins around sleeper berths in some AC sleeper buses has come under scrutiny, with transport authorities warning that such modifications may pose serious safety risks to passengers, particularly during emergencies.

Acting on complaints and inspection reports, Regional Transport Authority (RTA) enforcement teams conducted checks in the Miyapur area and seized an AC sleeper bus operated by a private travel operator. Officials found that glass enclosures had been installed around berths in violation of prescribed safety norms.

Authorities stated that such structural modifications are not permitted under existing vehicle safety regulations. They added that these alterations could hinder evacuation during emergencies and compromise passenger safety.

Transport officials said inspections against private travel operators have been intensified this year. Between January and June, 928 cases were registered against private buses for various violations identified during routine and surprise inspections.

Officials warned that strict action will continue against vehicles fitted with unauthorized modifications, including seizure of buses, removal of illegal structures, penalties, and possible criminal proceedings against operators.

They further directed private bus operators to comply strictly with safety regulations and court-mandated guidelines, emphasizing that passenger safety cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
