In a significant move to enhance bilateral ties, India has announced the resumption of tourist visa services for Bangladeshi citizens starting this Sunday. This marks the end of a nearly two-year suspension that had been in effect since August 2024, primarily due to escalating security concerns amidst political unrest in Bangladesh.
The announcement was made by Dinesh Trivedi, the newly-appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, during a press conference held in Dhaka on Thursday. He emphasized that the decision reflects India’s commitment to fostering strong people-to-people connections between the two neighboring nations. Tourist visa applications will initially be processed at five designated centers located in Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Khulna, with additional centers anticipated to reopen in the future.
The suspension of tourist visas was a direct response to the turbulent political climate in Bangladesh, which saw widespread anti-government protests leading to the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina seeking refuge in India. Relations further soured in December 2025 following the tragic death of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a prominent student leader whose passing ignited further protests and violent incidents across the country. These events have strained diplomatic ties and raised concerns on both sides, prompting each country to call in the other’s envoy to address escalating tensions.
Despite the challenges, India maintained its operations concerning humanitarian visas, particularly for urgent medical needs. Trivedi reiterated this commitment, stating that the issuance of medical visas would continue to be prioritized on compassionate grounds. This provision has allowed India to assist numerous Bangladeshi patients seeking medical treatment, thus reinforcing the vital link between the two nations.
As India gears up to welcome Bangladeshi tourists once again, there is hope that this renewed access will not only revive tourism but also contribute positively to the ongoing dialogue between the two countries. With both governments keen on improving relations, the reopening of tourist visa services could be a pivotal step towards stability and cooperation in South Asia.
