India Strengthens Strategic Footprint in the Indian Ocean with Landmark Seychelles Visit

Victoria, Seychelles | June 29, 2026

In a significant diplomatic and strategic milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his historic three-day visit to the Republic of Seychelles, where he attended the island nation’s 50th National Day Golden Jubilee celebrations as the Guest of Honour. The visit underscored India’s growing commitment to maritime security and regional cooperation in the Indian Ocean under its newly articulated Vision MAHASAGAR.

While the celebrations marked Seychelles’ five decades of independence, the visit carried far-reaching geopolitical significance. Positioned at the heart of the western Indian Ocean, Seychelles occupies a crucial maritime location along major international sea lanes connecting Asia, Africa and Europe. Strengthening ties with this island nation reinforces India’s role as a reliable security partner in the region.

A major highlight of the visit was the formal handover of the state-of-the-art Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Lespwar’ to the Seychelles Defence Forces. Built with Indian assistance, the vessel is expected to significantly enhance Seychelles’ capability to combat piracy, illegal fishing, maritime trafficking and other transnational threats. India also supplied advanced naval equipment and utility vehicles, reaffirming its long-standing defence partnership with the island nation.

Addressing the National Assembly, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s vision of ensuring a free, open, inclusive and secure Indian Ocean. He emphasized that the prosperity and security of the region depend on collective efforts, mutual trust and capacity building among friendly maritime nations.

The visit reflects India’s broader maritime strategy of strengthening partnerships with island nations while ensuring stability across the Indian Ocean Region. As global strategic competition intensifies, cooperation with countries such as Seychelles assumes greater importance in safeguarding vital shipping routes, promoting the blue economy and responding effectively to humanitarian and disaster-relief operations.

Defence analysts view the visit as another step in India’s emergence as the preferred security partner in the Indian Ocean. By investing in maritime infrastructure, defence capabilities and people-centric development projects, New Delhi continues to deepen its engagement with its Indian Ocean neighbours.

Prime Minister Modi’s Seychelles visit is expected to further elevate bilateral relations and reinforce India’s position as the region’s Net Security Provider, contributing to peace, stability and sustainable development across the Indian Ocean.

With Vision MAHASAGAR guiding India’s maritime diplomacy, the partnership between India and Seychelles stands as a testament to shared security, mutual trust and a common vision for a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
