Indian Rupee Hits Record Low Amid Global Turbulence; Kerala Government Abandons Controversial Rail Project

The Indian rupee has hit a staggering low of 96.9 against the US dollar, reflecting the ongoing economic pressures exacerbated by soaring global oil prices and geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in West Asia. Although the currency showed a slight recovery to 96.8 by the close of trade, it still marked a significant drop of 30 paise from the previous day’s low of 96.5. This decline marks the eighth consecutive trading session where the rupee has lost ground, making it the worst-performing currency in Asia for 2026, with a notable depreciation of 6% since the onset of the conflict on February 28.

As the rupee continues to struggle, analysts point to the rising crude oil prices as a key factor impacting the currency’s value. With India being one of the largest importers of oil, any increase in global oil prices directly affects the trade deficit, consequently weakening the rupee. Economists suggest that unless there is a stabilization of oil prices and a resolution to the ongoing geopolitical issues, the rupee may face additional downward pressures in the near future.

In a significant political development, the newly formed United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala has decided to discontinue the controversial Silver Line semi-high-speed rail project initiated by the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) administration. The ambitious plan aimed to build a 530-kilometer railway line connecting Thiruvananthapuram to Kozhikode to reduce travel time across the state. However, the project faced immense backlash from various quarters, including environmentalists and local communities, who raised concerns over land acquisition and ecological impacts.

The UDF’s decision to scrap the project underscores the ongoing political rivalry in the state, where infrastructure developments often become focal points of contention between ruling parties. The new government has pledged to focus on more sustainable and inclusive development projects that take into account the environmental and social ramifications. This move has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising the government for prioritizing environmental concerns, while others criticize it for abandoning a potentially transformative infrastructure project.

In another notable legal development, the Delhi High Court has intervened in a case involving commentator Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, whose social media posts regarding female employees at the news outlet Newslaundry had sparked outrage. A sessions court had previously stayed the filing of a first information report (FIR) against him, but the High Court has now set aside that order, demanding a fresh ruling based on sound reasoning within four weeks. This case highlights the ongoing tension between free speech and accountability in India’s public discourse, especially concerning the treatment of women in media and society.
