Journey of Hope: Bihar Families Send Children to Distant Madrasas for Education

In the impoverished landscapes of Bihar’s Araria district, a unique educational migration is taking place. Every year, Saddam, a teacher and local guide, undertakes the significant responsibility of escorting children from his village to madrasas located hundreds of miles away, specifically in Maharashtra. In April of this year, he was entrusted with the welfare of 100 eager learners from Bagdahara village, all of whom were set to receive free education at a madrasa in Latur district. For Saddam, this journey is not just a task; it is a rite of passage that mirrors his own educational journey.

Saddam reflected on his past, recalling how he and his friends traveled to a madrasa in Gujarat for a decade, facilitated by the efforts of an elder from their community, who would drop them off at the train station each year. This communal spirit highlights the deep-rooted values and traditions within these villages, where education is often sought beyond local boundaries.

On April 11, Saddam, along with his six-year-old son and three daughters, boarded the Patna Purna Express at Patna station, setting off on a journey that would be filled with unexpected challenges. Just three hours into their journey, however, the Railway Police Force intervened at Deen Dayal Upadhyay junction in Uttar Pradesh, asking them to disembark. Along with other groups of children heading to different madrasas in various states, they faced an uncertain moment.

Faced with this interruption, Saddam quickly exhibited resourcefulness. By showing necessary documentation and facilitating communication between the police and anxious parents over the phone, he ultimately convinced the authorities to allow them to continue their journey. This tenacity reflects the desperation and determination of families who view education as the key to a better future.

As dusk approached, however, they were met with yet another hurdle. This time, they were disembarked in Madhya Pradesh. The challenges faced by these families reveal the complex existence of those in India’s rural areas, where access to quality education often involves navigating bureaucratic hurdles and societal barriers. Yet, amidst these trials, the belief in education remains unwavering, and the hope that their children will attain a brighter future fuels these long journeys.
