Kolkata:
A cyber fraud case has been reported in Kolkata, where a man allegedly lost ₹90,000 after receiving a call claiming his missing daughter had been kidnapped, police sources said.
According to initial information, the incident occurred after a teenage girl was reported missing, following which her family began searching for her. During this period, the girl’s father reportedly received a phone call from unidentified individuals who claimed to have abducted her and demanded money for her release.
Police said that, under pressure, the father transferred ₹90,000. However, the girl later returned home safely, and no kidnapping was confirmed.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter. Officials are examining call records and digital transaction details to identify the individuals involved.
Police are also looking into how the callers obtained information related to the missing case. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding any data breach or wider network involvement at this stage.
Officials have advised citizens to verify such claims through local police before making any payments and to report suspicious calls to cybercrime helplines.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
