Jaspal Rana, a name synonymous with excellence in Indian shooting, has tragically passed away at the age of 49. The legendary pistol shooter and revered coach succumbed to complications arising from a heart condition, as confirmed by Dr. Balbir Singh, chief of interventional cardiology at Max Super Specialty Hospital in Delhi. Rana’s health had reportedly deteriorated during the Indian shooting team’s return from the World Cup in Munich, Germany.
Rana’s illustrious career is marked by his remarkable achievements in the Commonwealth Games, where he stands as India’s most successful athlete. He collected an impressive 15 medals across four editions of the event, including nine golds, four silvers, and two bronzes. His contributions to the sport extended beyond his own competitive successes; after retiring, he dedicated his life to coaching, nurturing the next generation of shooting talent.
Among those he mentored are some of India’s brightest shooting stars, including Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker, Saurabh Chaudhary, Anish Bhanwala, and Chinki Yadav. Under Rana’s guidance, Manu Bhaker made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first Indian athlete to clinch two medals in a single Olympic Games in the women’s and mixed team 10-meter air pistol events. This achievement showcases not only Bhaker’s talent but also Rana’s exceptional coaching prowess.
Recognized for his immense contributions to sports, Rana received several prestigious awards throughout his career. He was honored with the Arjuna Award in 1994, the Padma Shri in 1997, and the Dronacharya Award in 2020, acknowledging his exceptional skills as both an athlete and a coach. His dedication and commitment to the sport have inspired numerous aspiring shooters and will undoubtedly continue to influence future generations.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences, highlighting that Rana’s exemplary dedication and discipline in his field will leave a lasting impact on Indian sports. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, recognizing his role in elevating Indian shooting on the global stage.
