Madras High Court Questions Actor Vijay Over Alleged ₹100 Crore Discrepancy in Election Affidavits

Madras High Court Questions Actor Vijay Over Alleged ₹100 Crore Discrepancy in Election Affidavits

The Madras High Court has initiated a legal inquiry into the election affidavits submitted by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader and popular actor Vijay, following a petition that highlights a significant financial discrepancy exceeding ₹100 crore. The court has summoned Vijay, the Income Tax Department, and the Election Commission to provide their respective responses regarding the allegations made by a Chennai-based resident.

During the proceedings, a bench consisting of Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan scrutinized claims that the financial details Vijay disclosed in two different constituencies were inconsistent. Specifically, in the Tiruchirapalli East constituency, Vijay reported assets worth over ₹224 crore, while in Perumbur, he claimed assets totaling more than ₹105 crore. The petitioner pointed out this disparity as a serious irregularity, prompting the bench to comment on the apparent omissions. Chief Justice Dharmadhikari voiced concern, stating, “More than ₹100 crores has not been disclosed in one constituency,” underscoring the gravity of the situation.

However, it is essential to note that the court has not yet drawn any definitive conclusions regarding the authenticity of the allegations. Instead, it has adjourned the case for further examination in the upcoming week, just ahead of the significant Assembly polls scheduled for April 23, with results expected to be announced on May 4.

This legal scrutiny comes at a crucial time as Vijay makes his electoral debut, and the political landscape in Tamil Nadu braces for an intense contest. The allegations against him could have far-reaching implications not only for his political career but also for the integrity of the electoral process in the state. The election is highly anticipated, especially considering the popularity of Vijay among the youth and his ability to influence the electorate.

As the court pursues this matter, it raises important questions about transparency and accountability in political funding and disclosures. The upcoming hearings will be closely watched by political analysts and the general public alike, as they highlight the increasing importance of scrutiny in the political realm, especially with high-profile figures like Vijay entering the fray.
