Pawan Khera Seeks Anticipatory Bail from Gauhati High Court Amid Defamation Charges

In a significant legal development, Congress leader Pawan Khera has approached the Gauhati High Court for anticipatory bail following serious allegations made against him by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The case stems from a complaint filed by Sarma, who has accused Khera of defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.

The controversy erupted after Khera claimed during a press interaction on April 5 that he possessed documentary evidence indicating that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds multiple passports from countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. In response, both Riniki and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that Khera’s claims were not only baseless but also founded on forged documents.

Following the claims, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Khera, prompting him to seek legal recourse. In an initial respite, the Telangana High Court granted Khera transit anticipatory bail for a week on April 10. This temporary protection was intended to allow him the opportunity to approach the relevant court in Assam where the FIR had been lodged.

However, the situation took a turn when the Supreme Court intervened on April 15, imposing a stay on the Telangana High Court’s order. Khera subsequently filed an application requesting the Supreme Court to vacate this stay, but his plea was rejected. Furthermore, the Supreme Court declined to extend his transit bail, advising Khera to pursue his legal remedies directly through the Gauhati High Court instead.

The unfolding drama highlights the ongoing tensions in Indian politics, particularly in Assam, where allegations of corruption and political maneuvering have become increasingly common. Khera’s battle for anticipatory bail not only sheds light on his current predicament but also raises questions about the implications of political discourse in a heated electoral landscape. As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how the judicial system will navigate the intersection of politics and law.
