Modi Advocates for Maritime Security and Seafarer Safety at G7 Summit

During the recent G7 summit held in France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the critical need for securing maritime trade routes and safeguarding the lives of seafarers. Speaking directly to global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Modi highlighted the integral role that safe maritime navigation plays in fostering international trade and economic stability.

Modi’s address came amid increasing concerns over maritime safety in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that has been the site of numerous tensions. He remarked on the devastating impacts of ongoing conflicts in West Asia, noting that these hostilities have resulted in significant human and economic losses for countries in the region. “We welcome the progress made in peace efforts in West Asia,” Modi stated. He underscored how disruptions to maritime activities affect not only the regional economy but the global market as a whole, affecting countless livelihoods across nations.

In a poignant reminder of the risks faced by seafarers, Modi referred to recent incidents involving Indian nationals. Notably, on June 10, three Indian seafarers tragically lost their lives when U.S. military forces targeted a Palau-flagged commercial vessel near Oman. This attack led to the rescue of 21 crew members, but the loss of life raised urgent questions about the safety protocols in international waters.

“The safety of seafarers, who connect all nations through global maritime trade, is our responsibility,” Modi asserted, urging the international community to take collective action to ensure that sea routes remain secure. His call to action reflects a growing recognition of the necessity for collaborative efforts to protect those who work at sea, particularly in zones of conflict.

Modi’s remarks resonate deeply with India, a nation with a long maritime tradition and a significant number of its citizens working on vessels around the world. The Prime Minister’s emphasis on the welfare of seafarers not only underscores India’s commitment to international maritime law but also reflects the broader concerns regarding the safety and rights of workers in global trade.
