Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 10% reduction in water supply across Mumbai starting May 15, as a precautionary measure to manage water reserves ahead of the monsoon season.
The decision was taken following a pre-monsoon preparedness review meeting, during which officials assessed water stock levels, infrastructure readiness, and seasonal trends. BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide stated that the step is aimed at ensuring sustainable use of available water resources until reservoir levels improve with rainfall.
Officials noted that monsoon patterns remain uncertain, and any delay in rainfall could impact the lakes that supply water to the city. Mumbai depends on a network of reservoirs in surrounding regions for its daily water requirements.
The reduction in supply is expected to affect residential and commercial users, particularly during peak hours. Authorities have appealed to citizens to use water judiciously, fix leakages, and adopt conservation practices.
The civic body will continue to monitor reservoir levels and review the situation periodically based on rainfall and consumption trends.
