NEET-UG Exam to Transition to Computer-Based Format Starting Next Year, Announces Education Minister

In a significant move aimed at modernizing the examination process, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on Friday that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) will shift to a computer-based format starting next year. This decision comes on the heels of a controversial cancellation of this year’s exam, which took place on May 3, due to serious allegations of a paper leak.

The NEET-UG, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is a crucial examination for aspiring medical students in India. This year, over 22 lakh candidates took part, making the stakes exceptionally high. The cancellation of the exam has raised questions regarding the integrity of the assessment process and the safeguarding of candidates’ interests.

Pradhan emphasized that the decision to cancel the May 3 examination was made in the best interests of deserving students. Acknowledging a breakdown in the command structure, he stated that all necessary precautions were in place following recommendations from the Radhakrishnan committee, set up to address concerns regarding paper leaks and irregularities in the NEET-UG process. Despite these measures, the exam had to be scrapped after the Rajasthan Special Operations Group initiated an investigation into claims that a ‘guess paper’ circulated prior to the exam contained questions that closely mirrored those on the actual test.

The guess paper, riddled with questions purporting to predict the examination content, reportedly included around 410 questions, of which 120 were found to be identical to those featured in the chemistry section of the NEET-UG. The minister’s comments underline the urgent need for reforms in the testing process, especially in light of the high-profile committee’s recommendations, which reportedly numbered 95 in total.

Pradhan’s announcement of a shift to a computer-based format is a progressive step towards enhancing transparency and reliability in the examination system. As the education sector in India evolves, such initiatives could play a vital role in addressing the challenges posed by malpractice and ensuring a level playing field for all candidates. The transition is expected to not only streamline the examination process but also reduce the potential for human error and administrative lapses that have marred past NEET-UG assessments.

As we look forward to this significant change, the emphasis remains on maintaining the highest standards for one of India’s most critical examinations. The Ministry of Education is keen to reassure students and parents alike that every measure will be taken to safeguard the integrity of the NEET-UG going forward.
