21-Year-Old Nurse Brutally Murdered by Alleged Stalker at Bantwal KSRTC Bus Stand

Bantwal, Karnataka | July 17, 2026
A horrific incident at the Bantwal KSRTC bus stand in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district has sent shockwaves across the state after a 21-year-old nurse was allegedly murdered by a man accused of stalking her. The brutal attack, which took place in a busy public area, has once again raised serious concerns about women's safety and the growing menace of stalking.
The victim, Lavanya, worked as a nurse at a private clinic in Kalladka. According to police, she had finished work and was waiting to travel home from the BC Road KSRTC bus stand on the evening of July 16. As she boarded a bus bound for Kakyapadavu, the accused, identified as Chetan, allegedly followed her onto the bus while carrying a sword hidden inside a bag.
Police said Lavanya noticed the weapon and immediately sensed danger. She got off the bus in an attempt to escape and ran through the crowded bus stand, hoping to find safety among the commuters. However, the accused allegedly chased her before attacking her with the weapon in broad daylight.
The violent assault took place in front of dozens of shocked passengers and bystanders. Despite attempts by members of the public to help, the attacker fled the scene soon after the assault.
Lavanya was rushed to the Bantwal Government Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Her tragic death has left family members, friends, and the local community devastated.
Police Launch Manhunt
The Bantwal police have registered a murder case and launched an intensive search operation to apprehend the accused. Investigators believe the suspect had allegedly been stalking the victim for some time, although the exact motive behind the crime is still under investigation.
Police officials have formed special teams to track down the accused and have assured the public that every effort is being made to ensure a swift arrest. Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from the bus stand and recording statements from eyewitnesses.
Questions Over Women's Safety
The shocking murder has once again highlighted the dangers posed by stalking and harassment. Women's rights activists have called for stronger enforcement of anti-stalking laws, quicker police intervention in harassment complaints, and improved security at public transport hubs.
Many residents have questioned how such a brutal attack could occur in a crowded public place without immediate intervention. Citizens have urged the government to strengthen surveillance, increase police patrols, and improve emergency response systems at bus stations and other public areas.
Growing Concern
Incidents involving stalking and violence against women continue to raise alarm across India. Experts emphasize that stalking should never be dismissed as a minor offense, as it can escalate into serious acts of violence if warning signs are ignored. They stress the importance of encouraging victims to report harassment early and ensuring prompt action by law enforcement agencies.
Investigation Continues
As police continue their investigation, the focus remains on bringing the accused to justice while examining whether there were previous complaints or warning signs that could have prevented the tragedy.
The murder of the young nurse has sparked widespread grief and anger across Karnataka, with many demanding speedy justice and stronger measures to protect women in public spaces. The incident serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need to address stalking, harassment, and gender-based violence through effective policing, public awareness, and stricter enforcement of existing laws.
