Man Posing as Army Lieutenant Colonel Arrested for Defrauding Job Seekers

Murshidabad, West Bengal: A man allegedly posing as a senior Indian Army officer has been arrested for cheating unemployed youths by promising them jobs in the defence forces in exchange for large sums of money. The accused reportedly wore military uniforms, carried fake identity cards and used other props to make himself appear to be a high-ranking officer.
The arrest took place late Sunday night during a joint operation conducted by the Kolkata Army Intelligence Unit and Nabagram Police in Nabagram, Murshidabad district.
The accused has been identified as Tarun Das, a resident of the Sagardighi area. He was produced before the Lalbagh Sub-Divisional Court on Monday. Taking the seriousness of the case into account, the court remanded him to 10 days of police custody to facilitate further investigation and uncover the alleged fraud network.
According to preliminary findings, Das allegedly posed as a senior Lieutenant Colonel associated with the Indian Army's Para Special Forces and Military Intelligence. Dressed in a full military uniform, he reportedly moved around openly in different areas, projecting the image of a powerful defence officer.
To strengthen his false identity, he allegedly used a white four-wheeler fitted with number plates bearing the words 'Government of India' at both the front and rear. He also carried three walkie-talkies, which he reportedly used to create an impression of authority and convince people that he held a senior position in the armed forces.
Investigators suspect that he exploited this fabricated identity to gain the trust of unemployed candidates and extract substantial amounts of money from them by promising jobs in the defence sector.
During the operation, police seized the vehicle bearing the government markings. Three walkie-talkies, several mobile phones, fake Army identity cards and a number of documents considered relevant to the investigation were also recovered from the accused.
Police officials said that despite his alleged activities and his frequent appearances in military uniform, people in the neighbourhood had apparently remained unaware of his alleged criminal activities.
Das had reportedly been under intelligence surveillance for several days following suspicions about his movements. Acting on confidential information, the joint team conducted the raid on Sunday night and took him into custody.
Investigators are now trying to determine how far the alleged recruitment fraud network extends and whether other individuals were involved in the operation. The authorities are also examining the security implications of the recovery of the communication equipment.
Further questioning is underway as investigators work to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify others who may have been connected to the racket.
