Opposition Challenges Centre After MEA Declares Passport Not Proof of Citizenship

In a significant development, opposition leaders have raised critical questions regarding the validity of citizenship documentation in India. This inquiry follows a recent statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which clarified that a passport is merely a travel document and does not serve as proof of Indian citizenship.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate took to social media to express her concerns over this announcement, highlighting the fundamental role of a passport. She stated, “A passport is a document issued by a sovereign nation to its citizens for international travel.” This declaration led her to question whether it implies that non-citizens might be issued Indian passports, a scenario that could complicate how immigration authorities perceive the document. Shrinate’s post urged government agencies to reconsider their stance on what constitutes valid proof of citizenship.

Adding to the discourse, Asaduddin Owaisi, a prominent member of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), articulated his apprehensions regarding the implications of the MEA’s remarks. He asserted that the trajectory the country appears to be on raises grave concerns about citizenship and identity. Owaisi suggested that there seems to be a growing notion that membership in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could soon be equated with citizenship, an assertion that has stirred considerable debate.

The question of what constitutes valid proof of citizenship in the current political climate is pressing, especially in light of the ongoing discussions about the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). These policies have already fueled controversies and fears among various communities across the nation. The MEA’s statement could further exacerbate these concerns, as many citizens are left wondering which documents they can rely on to affirm their nationality.

The backdrop of these events is crucial to understanding the sentiments expressed by opposition leaders. The BJP government has been under scrutiny for its handling of citizenship issues, and this latest clarification from the MEA has provided a fresh wave of ammunition for dissenting voices. As political tensions rise, the call for clarity surrounding citizenship documentation is becoming more urgent. The opposition is demanding transparency and reassurance that all Indian citizens will be protected and recognized, regardless of political affiliations.
