NCERT Introduces 1975 Emergency in Class 9 Curriculum; Kolkata Warehouse Collapse Casualties Rise to Nine
In a significant update to the educational curriculum, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has incorporated a detailed section on the Emergency period from 1975 to 1977 in its Class 9 social science textbook. This addition, found in the chapter titled ‘Understanding Society: India and Beyond’, marks the first time this crucial historical event is part of the syllabus for younger students. Previously, the Emergency had been addressed primarily in the Class 12 political science curriculum, which included an analysis of its political, constitutional, and democratic ramifications.
The Emergency, declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was characterized by the suspension of fundamental rights and an unprecedented centralization of power. This addition aims to provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of India’s democratic journey and the challenges it has faced, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding democratic principles in contemporary society.
Meanwhile, the tragic collapse of a warehouse in Kolkata has resulted in a rising death toll, now reported at nine, as confirmed by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during an Assembly session. The incident occurred at a construction site near Brace Bridge in the Taratala area, where the structure collapsed unexpectedly, trapping numerous workers beneath the debris. Rescue operations have been ongoing, and authorities have reported at least 20 individuals sustaining injuries due to the incident.
In response to this disaster, law enforcement has detained five individuals connected with the construction project, as investigations continue to determine the cause of the collapse. The Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the need for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future. The incident has sparked public outrage, with many calling for accountability and better safety measures in construction practices throughout the state.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of these events, the introduction of the Emergency in the NCERT syllabus serves as a poignant reminder of India’s historical struggles and the ongoing importance of democratic values. In a time when the country faces various challenges, both politically and socially, fostering awareness and education around these pivotal moments in history is essential for nurturing informed citizens.
