Parimal Nathwani Emerges Victorious in Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Polls Amid Controversial Cross-Voting

In a surprising turn of events, Parimal Nathwani, an independent candidate backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has secured a win in the Rajya Sabha elections held in Jharkhand on Thursday. This election saw him defeat the Congress Party’s nominee, Pranav Jha, following incidents of cross-voting that have raised eyebrows among political observers.

The elections were contested for two Rajya Sabha seats, with Nathwani and Baidyanath Ram of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) claiming victory. Ram, a candidate endorsed by the ruling alliance that includes Congress, JMM, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation, managed to secure 30 votes—two of which were deemed invalid. Nathwani also received 30 votes, but similarly faced two invalidated votes, leading to a complex electoral scenario that has captivated political pundits.

In a legislative assembly of 81 members, where 28 first-preference votes were needed to win, Nathwani’s success is particularly notable given that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies only hold 24 seats. Pranav Jha, on the other hand, garnered 20 votes, with one vote being ruled invalid. The uncertainty surrounding which MLAs engaged in cross-voting has added an element of intrigue to the election results.

This victory marks Nathwani’s fourth term in the Rajya Sabha, and his third consecutive term representing Jharkhand. Previously, he served from 2008 until 2020, after which he was re-elected from Andhra Pradesh on a ticket from the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party. Notably, he is also the Director of Corporate Affairs at Reliance Industries, a powerhouse led by industrialist Mukesh Ambani.

Following the announcement of his victory, Nathwani took to social media to express his gratitude, particularly thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the support he received. His win is seen as a pivotal moment for the NDA in Jharkhand, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape of the state, which has seen varying allegiances and power dynamics in recent years.

As the political landscape evolves, the implications of this election will be closely monitored, especially considering the backdrop of shifting alliances and the ongoing power struggles within the state. Analysts suggest that the cross-voting incident could lead to further scrutiny of party loyalty among the MLAs and might influence future elections in Jharkhand.
