PIL Filed in Supreme Court Over Role of IPS Officer in West Bengal Election Duty

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court of India seeking the removal of IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma from his role as Police Observer in the ongoing West Bengal Assembly elections.

According to the petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, the plea raises concerns regarding the conduct of the electoral process and calls for judicial intervention to ensure free and fair elections.

The petitioner has alleged that the officer, currently deployed in South 24 Parganas, may not have maintained the level of impartiality expected from an observer appointed by the Election Commission of India. The petition claims instances of alleged “intimidation” and “undue influence” on political stakeholders. These allegations have not been independently verified.

The plea further refers to provisions under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, emphasizing that election observers are expected to function as neutral authorities to ensure compliance with electoral norms.

Ajay Pal Sharma is a 2011-batch IPS officer currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in Prayagraj. He has previously served in multiple districts across Uttar Pradesh in various policing roles.

During his current assignment in West Bengal, reports of protests by certain political supporters have also emerged. Officials have not issued any detailed public response regarding the allegations mentioned in the petition.

The PIL comes at a significant stage of the West Bengal Assembly elections, where polling has been conducted in multiple phases under heightened security arrangements. The results are scheduled to be announced on May 4.

The matter is expected to be taken up by the Supreme Court in due course. Any findings or directions will depend on judicial review of the claims presented in the petition.
