Repolling Kicks Off at 15 Booths in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas

Voting resumed on Saturday across 15 polling stations in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, following the Election Commission’s decision to conduct repolls at these sites. This crucial step came after reports of irregularities were noted during the second phase of the Assembly elections held earlier this week.

The repolling process began at 7 am and is set to continue until 6 pm, encompassing 11 booths in the Magrahat Paschim Assembly constituency and four in the Diamond Harbour constituency. This action marks a significant moment in the electoral process, as the first phase of the elections was completed on April 23, and the counting of votes is slated for Monday.

The Election Commission reported that the provisional voter turnout in West Bengal across both phases of the elections has reached an impressive 92.4%. However, the commission declared the elections void at these 15 booths following evaluations from returning officers and observers who cited “material circumstances” that warranted this rare intervention.

This is the first instance of repolling during the ongoing Assembly elections across several states, including Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. The decision to call for repolling has been met with mixed reactions, particularly in the context of the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal.

On the eve of the repolling, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised serious allegations against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing them of tampering with electronic voting machines in the Diamond Harbour area, specifically in Falta. They claimed that the button corresponding to the BJP symbol was intentionally obstructed across multiple booths. In contrast, the TMC has vehemently denied these accusations, asserting that the BJP’s claims are unfounded and aimed at creating unnecessary panic.

This situation highlights the ongoing political strife in West Bengal, a state known for its vibrant political culture and history of electoral controversies. As the repolling process unfolds, all eyes are on the Election Commission to maintain the integrity and transparency of the elections. The outcome of the votes cast today will play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of the state, as both major parties vie for power in this crucial battleground.
