Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike Ultimatum: Cockroach Janta Party Demands Education Minister’s Resignation

Sonam Wangchuk's Hunger Strike Ultimatum: Cockroach Janta Party Demands Education Minister's Resignation

In a fervent display of dissent, the Cockroach Janta Party staged its second protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, on Saturday, calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest was fueled by allegations of mismanagement in the administration of competitive exams, with prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk announcing a looming hunger strike if the government fails to address these grievances by June 27.

As hundreds of supporters gathered, the atmosphere was charged with chants of “Go Pradhan Go,” accompanied by the rhythmic clanging of plates and spoons. The protest symbolized a growing frustration among students and parents alike regarding the integrity of the education system. Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, likened Pradhan’s presence in his ministerial role to a “virus” that needed to be eradicated for the benefit of the nation’s future.

Dipke’s remarks drew a stark parallel to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier call for citizens to express gratitude during the COVID-19 crisis by banging utensils. This reference not only underscored the frustrations directed at the education minister but also highlighted a sense of disillusionment with how the government has handled educational matters during these trying times.

The timing of the protest was particularly poignant, coming just a day before the re-examination for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for prospective medical students. This has added urgency to the protesters’ demands, as students are already stressed about the challenges posed by the ongoing examination processes, which they feel have not been handled with due diligence.

Wangchuk, a well-known advocate for educational reform and sustainability, emphasized the dire need for accountability within the education sector. His commitment to an indefinite hunger strike reflects the escalating frustration among many who believe that the current administration has failed to uphold the standards expected in education. The movement is gaining traction, resonating not only with students but also with a broader segment of society that views education as a fundamental right and a pillar of national development.

This protest is a part of a larger narrative of public dissent against governmental policies perceived to be neglectful or mismanaged. As protests continue to unfold, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these mounting pressures, particularly with the critical June 27 deadline looming.
