The Government of West Bengal has suspended three senior IPS officers in connection with the RG Kar Medical College case that drew widespread public attention in 2024.
The suspended officers have been identified as Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Avishek Gupta.
According to government sources, the officers were suspended over allegations related to dereliction of duty and procedural lapses during the handling of the case. Sources also stated that a departmental inquiry would be conducted to examine their conduct and determine whether any further disciplinary action is required.
Reports regarding the suspensions emerged on Friday, while opposition leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, also commented publicly on the development.
The RG Kar Medical College case relates to the rape and murder of a young doctor in August 2024, an incident that triggered protests and demonstrations across West Bengal and several other parts of the country. Doctors, students, civil society groups and political parties had demanded a transparent investigation and accountability from authorities.
During the protests, questions were raised by demonstrators and opposition groups regarding the handling of the investigation and the response of senior police officials. The state government led by Mamata Banerjee faced criticism from opposition parties over the administration’s response to the case.
The victim’s parents had repeatedly appealed for a fair and transparent investigation and strict action against those found responsible.
The case remains one of the most sensitive criminal investigations in recent West Bengal history. Officials said the departmental inquiry against the suspended officers would determine whether any additional administrative or legal action is necessary.
