Tragic Cycle: Kashmir Family Loses Two Sons to Violence Over 26 Years

In a heart-wrenching tale of loss, the Mughal family from Ganderbal district in Jammu and Kashmir has faced the cruel hand of violence not once, but twice over a span of 26 years. In 1997, Ishfaq Ahmad Mughal was abducted from his home and killed by militants, and in an eerie echo of that tragedy, his younger brother, Rashid Ahmad Mughal, was reportedly killed by the Army on April 1, 2023, under circumstances that have raised serious questions about the nature of his death.

The Mughal family’s ordeal began in the late 1990s when Ishfaq was targeted due to his perceived support for the Indian Army, a label that ultimately cost him his life. His family has lived with the trauma of that loss for over two decades, a wound that was reopened when Rashid, who left home early for work, was declared a militant by the Army the following day. Ajaz Ahmad Mughal, Rashid’s elder brother, is struggling to comprehend how his brother could be labeled a militant within just a few hours of leaving home.

According to Ajaz, Rashid was a hardworking individual with no affiliations to militant groups. The stark contrast between the family’s recollections and the Army’s narrative has led to widespread skepticism in the community. Eyewitness accounts from local villagers also suggest that the circumstances surrounding Rashid’s death may not align with the claims made by the Army. The mounting doubts have prompted Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, to initiate a magisterial inquiry into the incident. However, more than a week has passed without any substantial updates, leaving the family and the community in a state of anxiety and frustration.

The allegations of a staged encounter have become a bitter reminder of the ongoing conflict in the region, where many families continue to suffer due to violence and loss. Rashid’s body reportedly bore 19 bullet wounds, a detail that further fuels the family’s belief that the Army’s version of events is far from the truth. This repeated cycle of grief and violence not only highlights the personal tragedies faced by families like the Mughals but also underscores the larger issues of security, justice, and accountability in Kashmir.

As the inquiry progresses, the Mughal family hopes for clarity and justice, a chance to at least find some solace in the truth. The questions surrounding Rashid’s death are emblematic of a much broader narrative in Kashmir, where the scars of conflict run deep, and the quest for peace remains an enduring challenge. The community stands united in its demand for justice, as it navigates the painful history that continues to unfold, one family at a time.
