In a shocking incident that has sent waves of outrage across Uttarakhand, an 18-year-old Dalit boy, Ketan Lal, was reportedly murdered by the family of a 15-year-old upper caste girl due to their alleged relationship. This tragic event unfolded in the picturesque yet tension-filled Tehri Garhwal district, highlighting the persistent issue of caste-based violence in India.
According to police reports, Ketan received a call from the girl’s phone on Sunday night, prompting him to visit her family home. Upon his arrival, he was allegedly detained and brutally beaten by the girl’s relatives. Senior Superintendent of Police Shweta Choubey confirmed that Ketan was held captive until Monday morning, during which time he was reportedly assaulted by the girl’s father and grandfather. A friend who had accompanied him also faced violence during this harrowing encounter.
The following morning, the girl’s father shockingly called Ketan’s father, Dhampal Lal, to inform him of the situation. In a distressing confession, he claimed responsibility for Ketan’s death, stating that he had killed him and disposed of his body in a nearby stream. When Dhampal Lal located his son, he found Ketan severely injured. Tragically, on the way to the hospital, Ketan allegedly stated that he was targeted because of his Scheduled Caste identity, revealing the caste prejudices that led to this brutal act.
Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, Ketan succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a grieving family and a community grappling with the implications of caste discrimination and violence. In a desperate attempt to seek justice, Dhampal Lal recorded a video of his son’s statements before he passed away and submitted it to the police as evidence.
The incident has reignited debates surrounding caste-based violence in India, prompting various social activists and organizations to call for justice and stronger measures against such atrocities. Activists have condemned the actions of the girl’s family and demand accountability within the legal system, emphasizing the urgent need for societal change in attitudes towards caste.
