Udhayanidhi Stalin Calls for Eradication of Sanatana Dharma, Sparks Political Controversy in Tamil Nadu

In a controversial statement made during his inaugural address as the Opposition Leader in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, a prominent figure of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has reiterated his call for the eradication of Sanatana Dharma, a term often associated with Hinduism. His remarks have ignited a fierce political backlash, particularly from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accuses him of spreading divisive and inflammatory rhetoric.

Stalin’s speech, delivered on a significant day for the assembly, included the phrase, “May Tamil win. Long live Tamil Nadu. Sanatanam, which divides people, should be eradicated.” This statement aligns with his previous remarks where he controversially likened Sanatana Dharma to diseases such as dengue and malaria. Such comments have raised eyebrows and provoked intense discussions around communal harmony and the role of religion in politics.

The BJP was quick to respond to Stalin’s comments, labeling them as a venomous attack on the Sanatana Dharma. They expressed their discontent via social media, stating, “He has again called for Sanatan to be eradicated. Remember, he is the same person who compared Sanatan Dharma to diseases such as malaria and dengue. The people of Tamil Nadu have already rejected him and his ideology… so you know the mood of the state.” This highlights the current political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu, where religious sentiments are deeply intertwined with electoral politics.

Udhayanidhi Stalin has previously faced criticism for his comments regarding Sanatana Dharma, which he believes perpetuates division among communities. His remarks reflect the ongoing tension between secular and religious narratives in Indian politics, particularly in a state like Tamil Nadu, which has a rich history of Dravidian politics that often challenges traditional norms.

As these heated exchanges unfold, the broader implications for communal harmony and political discourse in Tamil Nadu remain to be seen. The DMK, under Stalin’s leadership, seems to be adopting a more aggressive stance against what they perceive as the imposition of religious ideologies, while the BJP is mobilizing to defend Hindu beliefs, framing the DMK’s approach as an attack on the very fabric of Indian society. The coming weeks will likely see further developments in this politically charged environment, as leaders from both sides seek to consolidate their support bases in a state known for its dynamic and often polarized political landscape.
