US and Iran Set 60-Day Timeline for Final Peace Agreement, Say Mediators

In a significant step towards reconciliation, the United States and Iran have charted a roadmap aimed at finalizing a peace agreement within the next 60 days. This announcement was made by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar on Monday following the initial round of discussions held in Switzerland under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding framework.

According to the joint statement released by the mediators, the talks were conducted in a “positive and constructive atmosphere.” The progress made between Washington and Tehran was described as “encouraging,” especially in establishing a framework for subsequent technical discussions. The negotiations are set to continue throughout the week, indicating both parties’ willingness to engage further.

As part of the newly agreed plan, the US and Iran will form a high-level committee tasked with overseeing the mediation process politically. This committee will play a crucial role in coordinating efforts, with chief negotiators reporting their findings while leading working groups dedicated to pressing issues such as nuclear proliferation, sanctions, and ensuring effective monitoring and resolution of disputes arising from the interim agreement reached on Thursday.

The mediators emphasized that clear communication channels would be established between the parties. This is aimed at mitigating any potential misunderstandings and ensuring safe commercial navigation through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a region that sees a significant amount of global oil transportation. Following this announcement, global oil prices experienced a decline, reflecting market optimism regarding the ongoing negotiations.

This development comes at a time when tensions between the US and Iran have historically been fraught with conflict, particularly concerning nuclear ambitions and sanctions. The successful establishment of this roadmap could pave the way for a more stable Middle East, which would have profound implications not just for the regional players involved but also for global geopolitics and economic conditions, including those affecting India.
