US-Iran News LIVE: Trump Signals Major Peace Deal, Says Strait of Hormuz to Reopen

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced what he described as significant progress toward a peace agreement with Iran, claiming that the developing deal would lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — the crucial maritime corridor through which nearly one-fifth of global oil exports pass.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that Washington had been actively involved in negotiations with Tehran, reportedly in coordination with Gulf nations. He also confirmed that he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the ongoing discussions.

“I had a call with Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, of Israel, which, likewise, went very well. Final aspects and details of the Deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly,” Trump wrote.

### Strait of Hormuz at the Centre of Global Attention

The announcement comes amid growing global concern over energy supplies and rising oil prices following months of instability in the Gulf region. Since the US-Iran conflict erupted on February 28, international crude oil markets have witnessed sharp volatility, driven largely by fears surrounding disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump suggested that the proposed agreement would not only ease tensions but also restore shipping access through the strategic waterway.

“In addition to many other elements of the Agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened,” he added.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and remains one of the world’s most strategically important trade routes for energy transportation.

### Iran Pushes Back on Trump’s Claims

However, Iran appeared to challenge parts of Trump’s statement. According to Iran’s Fars news agency, Trump’s remarks regarding the future status of the Strait of Hormuz were “inconsistent with reality.”

The report indicated that any understanding being negotiated would still allow Tehran to retain management and oversight of the critical passageway.

The conflicting statements highlight the uncertainty that still surrounds the proposed agreement despite claims of progress from Washington.

### Pakistan Playing Key Mediation Role

Diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent weeks following the April 8 ceasefire between the US and Iran. Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator in the negotiations.

Iranian officials on Saturday confirmed that discussions were underway regarding a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war permanently. The announcement came shortly after Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir visited Tehran as part of ongoing diplomatic mediation efforts.

According to two Pakistani sources familiar with the talks, the proposed agreement is “fairly comprehensive to terminate the war.” Pakistan’s military also described the negotiations as “encouraging,” indicating optimism over a possible breakthrough.

### Shehbaz Sharif Praises Trump’s Peace Efforts

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly welcomed Trump’s diplomatic initiatives. In a post on X, Sharif praised the US President for his “extraordinary efforts to pursue peace.”

The latest developments have raised hopes of a broader regional de-escalation, although many details of the proposed agreement remain undisclosed.

As global markets closely monitor the situation, the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could have major implications for oil prices, global trade, and geopolitical stability across the Middle East.
