VD Satheesan Takes Charge as Kerala Chief Minister, Ending Congress Stalemate

In a decisive move following a prolonged period of indecision, the Congress party has appointed VD Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala. This announcement was made on Thursday, concluding a deadlock that persisted for more than ten days after the Assembly elections held on May 4. Satheesan, who has served as the Leader of the Opposition in the previous Kerala Assembly, emerged as the consensus candidate among party leaders.

The decision came after extensive discussions involving senior Congress officials and local leaders from Kerala, including key figures such as Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Their discussions underscored the importance of unified leadership as the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) celebrated a significant victory, securing 102 seats out of 140 in the Kerala Assembly. This triumph marks a notable shift in power, ending a decade-long reign of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front.

The selection process for the Chief Minister’s position had been contentious, with several prominent candidates in the running, including MLA Ramesh Chennithala and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal. On Wednesday, Venugopal expressed his support for Satheesan’s appointment, stating that it was a welcome decision and that the UDF government would be committed to fulfilling the aspirations and promises made to the citizens of Kerala. “We are fully behind the government of Keralam,” he emphasized.

As the newly appointed Chief Minister, Satheesan, who has been elected six times as an MLA, carries the hopes of many as he looks to address key issues facing the state, from economic recovery post-pandemic to social welfare initiatives. His recent electoral victory in the Paravur constituency against the CPI’s ET Taison has further solidified his mandate.

In a formal endorsement of his leadership, the Congress Legislature Party is scheduled to convene later on Thursday at the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. This meeting will lay the groundwork for the new government and outline its priorities moving forward. As the UDF prepares to assume governance, the people’s expectations are high, and the upcoming days will be critical in shaping the state’s political landscape under Satheesan’s leadership.
