In a significant move ahead of the upcoming second phase of Assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission has instructed the state police to intensify efforts against individuals involved in the manufacture of explosives. This directive was issued following the alarming seizure of a large cache of bombs and explosive materials from an abandoned property in Majherhat, located in the South 24 Parganas district.

According to police reports shared on social media, the confiscated items include 79 crude bomb-like devices, alongside approximately 3.3 kilograms of gunpowder, 1.6 kilograms of sulphur, jute ropes, and ten packets of roll caps. The Bomb Disposal Squad played a crucial role in ensuring the safe recovery of these dangerous materials, which were seized in accordance with established procedures. An investigation is currently underway to determine the origins and intended use of the explosives.

The timing of this discovery is particularly concerning, coming just three days before the state is set to hold its second phase of polling on Wednesday. The first phase took place on April 23, and the votes from this round are scheduled for counting on May 4. Given the tense atmosphere surrounding the elections, the police and administrative bodies are under significant pressure to report back to the Election Commission, as the Model Code of Conduct remains in effect across the state.

An official from the Election Commission, who chose to remain unnamed, revealed that a special drive has now been launched to apprehend individuals engaged in the production of explosives. Furthermore, all related cases are expected to be investigated thoroughly by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). This highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the issue of electoral violence and the imperative to ensure a safe and fair voting environment.
