Mumbai Faces Fresh CNG Price Rise: Rs 2 Hike Amid Fuel Inflation

Mumbai, a bustling metropolis, is grappling with yet another price hike in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), as Mahanagar Gas Limited has announced an increase of Rs 2 per kg. This adjustment, effective from midnight on Saturday, raises the cost of CNG to Rs 86 per kg across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and surrounding areas. This marks the second price escalation in just two weeks, following a similar hike earlier this month.

The recent surge in prices comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have contributed to fluctuations in global oil and gas markets. Mahanagar Gas Limited, responsible for distributing CNG in Maharashtra, had previously raised the price on May 14, indicating a troubling trend for consumers relying on CNG for transport and other needs.

Compounding the situation, petrol and diesel prices have also seen an uptick, with rates rising by an average of Rs 2.8 per litre across the country just four days prior to the CNG hike. This series of increases marks the fourth adjustment in fuel prices within a span of two weeks. As a result, the cost of petrol in Mumbai has reached Rs 111.2 per litre, while diesel now stands at Rs 97.8 per litre. These cumulative increases have left consumers feeling the pinch, with petrol and diesel prices climbing nearly Rs 7.5 per litre since mid-May.

Experts suggest that these hikes reflect the broader trends in crude oil and gas markets, which have remained elevated due to international supply disruptions and increased demand. The ripple effect of these price hikes is likely to impact not only transportation costs but also the prices of essential goods and services, as logistics expenses rise.

As the situation evolves, consumers and industry stakeholders alike are keeping a close watch on potential further adjustments. The ongoing fluctuations in fuel prices highlight the vulnerability of Indian consumers to global market shifts, and as the nation grapples with economic recovery post-pandemic, these increases can be seen as an unwelcome burden.
