Bangla Pokkho Leader Garga Chatterjee Arrested Over EVM Controversy Ahead of Bengal Elections

Bangla Pokkho Leader Garga Chatterjee Arrested Over EVM Controversy Ahead of Bengal Elections

Kolkata Police have taken Garga Chatterjee, the head of the pro-Bengali advocacy group Bangla Pokkho, into custody for allegedly disseminating false information regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in the lead-up to the West Bengal Assembly elections. This incident has starkly highlighted the tense atmosphere surrounding the electoral process in the state.

According to reports from PTI, Chatterjee’s arrest was executed by the cybercrime unit of the Kolkata Police following a formal complaint lodged by an official from the Election Commission. Police Commissioner Ajay Nand stated that Chatterjee’s social media activity had raised suspicions of EVM tampering and other electoral malpractices, which he claimed exacerbated divisions and confusion among various political factions.

Chatterjee’s issues with the Election Commission first gained traction on April 23, coinciding with the initial phase of the elections. On this day, a number of polling booths faced significant delays in voting due to technical issues, leading to heightened scrutiny of the electoral machinery. Notably, Chatterjee’s criticisms did not stop there; on May 4, during the counting of votes, he once again took to social media to accuse the Election Commission of orchestrating a clandestine agenda.

Despite the police’s attempts to interrogate him, having issued two notices for his appearance, Chatterjee failed to comply, which ultimately led to his arrest. The police have emphasized the need to maintain the integrity of the electoral process, and Chatterjee’s actions were perceived as potentially undermining public trust.

The incident raises important questions about the role of social media in shaping political narratives in India, particularly during sensitive times like elections. With tensions already high among political parties in West Bengal, any suggestion of electoral irregularities can lead to widespread repercussions. As the political landscape continues to evolve in the state, this arrest serves as a stark reminder of the thin line political figures must walk when voicing their opinions on the electoral process.
