Bihar CM Declares Welfare Benefits Denied for Voters Excluded from Electoral Rolls

In a controversial move that echoes similar policies in West Bengal, Bihar’s Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced that individuals excluded from the special intensive revision of electoral rolls will forfeit their eligibility for vital welfare benefits. This statement marks a significant policy shift under the BJP-led government, raising concerns about the implications for those affected.

Choudhary explicitly stated that individuals whose names have been removed from the voter list will no longer be entitled to government aid, including essential resources like rations and benefits from various welfare schemes. Furthermore, he indicated that banking facilities, such as passbooks, would also be revoked for these individuals “in due course of time.” This announcement has sparked heated debates about the intersection of electoral eligibility and access to welfare in India.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come shortly after the Election Commission informed the Supreme Court that being ineligible to vote due to the electoral revision process does not strip individuals of their Indian citizenship. This clarification emphasizes the complexities surrounding citizen rights and government benefits in the context of electoral processes.

Choudhary’s statements follow a similar directive from the West Bengal administration, which recently announced that women whose names were removed from the electoral rolls would be barred from accessing the Annapurna Bhandar scheme. This new scheme, set to replace the previous Lakshmi Bhandar program, provides a monthly cash handout of ₹3,000, aiming to support women’s financial empowerment. The policy shift in both states raises questions about the broader implications for vulnerable populations who rely on such government support.

As these developments unfold, it is crucial for citizens to understand their rights and the potential impact of political decisions on their access to essential services. The situation shines a light on the growing entanglement between electoral politics and social welfare in India, prompting a necessary dialogue on the responsibilities of government towards its citizens.
