Digital Transformation of Solid Waste Management: BSWML Highlights Technology-Driven Reforms

Bengaluru: The digital transformation of solid waste management under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has been presented as a significant step towards improving transparency, operational efficiency and service delivery.

According to project documentation, the initiative focused on addressing operational challenges such as manual attendance discrepancies, fleet monitoring and waste collection management through the adoption of digital technologies.

Key components of the programme include the integration of GPS tracking, RFID technology and mobile applications to enable real-time monitoring of waste management operations. The digital ecosystem comprises multiple integrated platforms designed to support the management of thousands of waste collection vehicles operating across Bengaluru.

The initiative also introduced supervisory tools to assist field officers in monitoring operations from workforce attendance and vehicle deployment to waste collection and disposal. Officials state that these systems have strengthened accountability and improved operational oversight.

Project documentation further states that technology-enabled monitoring has contributed to improved billing accuracy and enhanced financial transparency by reducing irregularities in operational processes.

According to the project report, the digital model has attracted attention as a scalable governance initiative, with similar technology-driven approaches being considered or adopted by other urban local bodies. The programme is also presented as an example of the increasing use of digital solutions to strengthen municipal service delivery.

Officials associated with the initiative said continued collaboration among administrative authorities, technical teams and field personnel remains essential for sustaining improvements in urban solid waste management.
