Election Commission Adds 136 Voters in Bengal Ahead of Assembly Polls Amidst Ongoing Appeals
In a significant development ahead of the first phase of the Assembly elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission (EC) has published a supplementary list that includes 136 new voters. These additions were made following the acceptance of their appeals by appellate tribunals, as reported by ABP Ananda.
The recently published electoral roll reflects an impressive approval rate of 98.5%, with only two of the 138 cases reviewed by the tribunals being rejected. This action is part of a broader initiative to ensure an accurate and updated electoral roll as the state gears up for its Assembly elections. The Supreme Court had previously instructed the EC to expedite the publication of a supplementary voters’ list that includes those whose appeals against deletions were approved before the election.
Notably, the EC has been under immense pressure to address the substantial backlog of appeals pending before the tribunals. Reports indicate that approximately 34 lakh appeals are currently in the system, with seven lakh of these aimed at contesting the inclusion of names on the rolls. Meanwhile, a staggering 27 lakh appeals have been filed by individuals who have found themselves excluded from the electoral lists. This situation raises questions about the efficiency and transparency of the electoral process in West Bengal.
The Supreme Court’s directive emphasized that individuals whose appeals were resolved before April 21 should be permitted to vote in the first phase of the Assembly elections. For those whose appeals are decided by April 27, they will be included in the final electoral rolls for the subsequent phase of polling. This timeline is crucial for maintaining electoral integrity, as it ensures that all decisions made by the tribunals regarding the addition or deletion of voters are reflected accurately.
As West Bengal approaches the polls, the focus on voter inclusivity has never been more critical. The state’s political landscape is vibrant and often contentious, with various parties vying for the support of a diverse electorate. The EC’s actions to streamline the electoral roll and include voters at this juncture reflects a commitment to fostering a fair electoral environment. It is imperative for citizens to stay informed and engaged as the election dates draw near, ensuring that their voices are heard and represented.
