FIR Filed Against 13 Hansraj College Students Amid Allegations of Misconduct During Annual Festival

A first information report (FIR) has been lodged against 13 individuals, including several students from Delhi University’s renowned Hansraj College, following allegations of violence and misconduct at an annual festival held earlier this month. According to reports from The Indian Express, the incident has sparked severe disciplinary actions from the college administration.

On April 20, the college suspended a total of 30 students for what it described as breaches of discipline, coupled with accusations of defaming the college on social media platforms. The allegations come in the wake of a chaotic situation that reportedly escalated during the festival, which saw students clashing physically with outsiders who entered the campus unlawfully.

Rama Sharma, the principal of Hansraj College, expressed her concerns over the deteriorating situation, stating that the administration felt compelled to involve the police due to the severity of the misconduct. In her comments, she confirmed that the complaint included the names of four office-bearers from the student union who were directly responsible for organizing the festival. “The involvement of the police was necessary as the situation was getting out of hand,” she conveyed, highlighting the gravity of the circumstances.

The disturbances reportedly took place during the college’s annual festival, which is a significant event in the academic calendar that draws participation from numerous students and external guests. Videos circulating on social media platforms between April 8 and April 9 depicted the altercations, raising concerns about safety and conduct on campus.

The FIR was officially filed on April 24 at the Maurice Nagar police station, prompted by a formal complaint from Principal Sharma. The ongoing investigations will examine the events leading up to the violence and misconduct allegations, aiming to ensure accountability among those involved. This incident has not only put the spotlight on student behavior during college events but has also raised questions regarding campus security and the management of such large gatherings.
