Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that Guwahati is likely to host summit-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on July 1, 2026, although official confirmation from the governments of India and Japan is still awaited.
According to statements by the Chief Minister and media reports, the Japanese Prime Minister may visit Assam on a three-day trip, with Guwahati proposed as the venue for the bilateral summit.
The discussions are expected to focus on economic cooperation, infrastructure development, the India–Japan strategic partnership, and opportunities in Northeast India under India’s Act East Policy.
The proposed visit would be significant for Assam because a planned India–Japan summit in Guwahati in 2019 involving former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was postponed and later cancelled.
Recent reports have also indicated that beautification and infrastructure-preparation work has begun in Guwahati ahead of the proposed summit.
Officials have not yet issued a final confirmation regarding the schedule of the visit or the summit.
