Noida Workers' Unrest: Two Activists Charged Under NSA for Alleged Violence Incitement

In a significant escalation following the workers’ protests that erupted in Noida earlier this year, Uttar Pradesh Police have invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against two individuals accused of inciting violence. The arrests come in the wake of a series of demonstrations held by workers demanding an increase in their wages and better working conditions.

The protests, which began on April 13, turned chaotic as demonstrators reportedly engaged in stone-throwing and vandalism, prompting a heavy police response. Security forces were deployed to restore order as the situation spiraled, with images of the unrest quickly circulating across social media platforms. The day after the clash, authorities confirmed the arrest of over 350 protesters linked to the incidents.

The accused, identified as 60-year-old Satya Verma, a former journalist, and 25-year-old Aakriti Chaudhary, a history graduate from Durgapur, West Bengal, have been associated with the Mazdoor Bigul Dasta, a workers’ organization championing labor rights. According to police statements, both individuals played a pivotal role in escalating tensions during the protests, allegedly instigating violence and chaos among the crowds.

Police reports suggest that Verma and Chaudhary actively incited individuals across various locations to disrupt public order, a claim that has raised concerns about the broader implications for civil liberties and dissent in the region. The NSA allows for detention without trial for extended periods, raising alarms among activists and human rights advocates regarding its potential misuse.

Chaudhary’s family, expressing concern for her welfare, reported that she was apprehended under dubious circumstances. As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely for the legal ramifications of these arrests and their impact on labor movements across India. The protests in Noida not only highlight the struggles of workers but also underscore the challenges faced by authorities in balancing security with the right to protest.
