Indian Government Condemns Attack on Flagged Vessel Off Oman, Crew Safe

The Indian government has expressed strong condemnation of an attack on an Indian-flagged ship that occurred off the coast of Oman on Wednesday. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has described the incident as “unacceptable,” emphasizing the safety of the crew who were onboard at the time of the assault.

In a statement issued on Thursday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that all Indian crew members are safe following the incident, although the identity of the perpetrators remains unclear. This attack comes during a time of heightened tensions in the West Asia region, where ongoing conflicts are creating an increasingly perilous environment for commercial maritime operations.

Jaiswal expressed the government’s dismay over the continuing threats faced by commercial shipping and civilian mariners, stating, “We deplore the fact that commercial shipping and civilian mariners continue to be targeted.” He further reiterated India’s stance that any actions endangering innocent civilian crew members or disrupting freedom of navigation should be strictly avoided. The MEA’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian nationals abroad remains unwavering.

The backdrop to this attack involves broader geopolitical tensions, particularly following a series of military confrontations in the region. On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated operations against Iran, citing existential threats posed by Tehran’s actions. In response, Iran launched counterattacks targeting both Israel and U.S. military bases in the area. The escalation has intensified fears among shipping industries, particularly as Iran has effectively obstructed the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial maritime route through which approximately 20% of the world’s petroleum supply transits.

This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of commercial vessels in volatile regions and raises concerns about the potential implications for global trade and energy security. As the international community seeks to navigate these troubled waters, calls for renewed diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of maritime routes are becoming more urgent.
