Odisha Railway Police Intervenes to Halt Bid to Send Bihar Children to Madrasa

In a surprising turn of events, a group of 59 children from the Araria district of Bihar, who were en route to a madrasa in Odisha, were intercepted by railway police at Cuttack station. The incident, which has raised eyebrows among parents and local authorities, unfolded as the children were traveling to the Jamia Islamia Riyaztul Oloom madrasa located approximately 40 kilometers from Cuttack. According to reports, the children were described as being ‘rescued’ by the Railway Protection Force and subsequently handed over to the Cuttack Child Welfare Committee.

Parents of the children expressed their dismay, asserting that their kids were on a legitimate educational journey, backed by consent letters and identification documents. Advocate MD Nawaz Hassan, who is representing these families, stated that a maulvi associated with the madrasa was barred from taking the children, who are now being accommodated in a government-run shelter home managed by the Child Welfare Committee in Cuttack. The situation reflects the broader tensions surrounding children’s rights, education, and the role of authorities in intervening in family matters.

SK Shareef, the head of the Jamia Islamia Riyaztul Oloom madrasa, defended the trip, clarifying that the accompanying teachers had proper identification, including Aadhaar cards, alongside consent letters from the children’s parents. He remarked, “These two documents should have sufficed, yet the police detained the children after this was presented.” Shareef further noted that he had not made the journey to Cuttack himself, adding an extra layer of complexity to the unfolding drama.

The chairperson of the Cuttack Child Welfare Committee, Manoj Vishwas, was contacted for comments but did not respond to queries regarding the rationale behind the decision to detain the children. The incident has sparked discourse about the balance between educational pursuits and the protective measures taken by authorities. Many are questioning whether such interventions, though well-intentioned, might infringe upon the rights of families seeking to provide their children with educational opportunities.

As the story develops, both parents and local authorities are left grappling with the implications of this incident. The debate on children’s rights, parental consent, and the roles of educational institutions and government bodies continues to generate discussion, making it a significant topic in the current socio-political landscape of India.
