Punjab CM Urges President to Cancel Membership of Six AAP Rajya Sabha MPs for Joining BJP
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann made headlines on Tuesday after his significant meeting with President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi, where he called for the cancellation of membership for six Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who recently defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This dramatic political shift has raised eyebrows and ignited discussions regarding the integrity of democratic institutions in India.
On April 26, seven out of the ten AAP MPs in the Rajya Sabha made the controversial decision to join the BJP’s legislative unit, a move that has been seen as an alarming trend in Indian politics, particularly in Punjab, where the AAP is currently in power. Except for Swati Maliwal, all the defectors had been elected from Punjab, which raises questions about the motivations behind their exit from the party. During his interaction with the President, Mann emphasized that the six MPs were selected by AAP legislators in Punjab, implying that their allegiance should be to the party and its voters, rather than to the BJP.
In a post-meeting statement, Mann expressed his deep concerns regarding what he referred to as the “murder of democracy” taking place in the nation. He condemned the actions of political leaders who, he believes, resort to unconstitutional methods to break party affiliations and misuse central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to facilitate such political migrations. Mann’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among opposition parties that the ruling BJP is undermining democratic norms to consolidate power.
As part of his appeal, Mann submitted a memorandum to the President, which was signed by all AAP MLAs from Punjab, formally requesting the termination of the six MPs’ memberships. This action underscores the party’s commitment to uphold its democratic values and protect the interests of its constituents. Mann’s plea comes at a crucial time when political alignments in India are increasingly being scrutinized, leading many to question the stability of party loyalties and the ethical implications of such defections.
In his social media post following the meeting, Mann reiterated that the tactics employed to undermine political adversaries through “Operation Lotus” are a direct threat to democratic integrity. The phrase “Operation Lotus” has been coined to describe the BJP’s alleged strategy of luring legislators from rival parties, prompting fears of a growing trend of political instability. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this clash of political ideals will impact not just the AAP but the broader landscape of Indian politics.
